Nurses give ward staffing warning
Guernsey health bosses have been urged by nurses not to rush re-opening hospital beds if staffing is a problem.
Ten beds were closed in Giffard Ward at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital in April because of a shortage of nurses.
Two have been reinstated and the Health Department had been looking at whether it was possible to re-open the remainder of the ward by September.
Bev Clark, of the Royal College of Nursing, said it was important staff levels were back to normal first.
Only 22 beds are open in Giffard Ward instead of 30 so the unit can be managed safely at current staff levels.
The Health and Social Services Department said it regretted any inconvenience caused.
Bev Clark said: "If they can open them earlier, yes - as long as they have got the right number of staff because you put patients at risk if you haven't.
"And nurses working extra hours to keep things open, that can cause problems as well."
The Health Department said it was working to get the ward back to full strength as soon as possible. (from BBC)
Why is it taking so long to sort this out?
