112-year-old marries his lady - aged 17

One of the world's oldest men 'has realised his dream' by marrying a girl aged just 17.



Ahmed Mohamed Dhore, who claims to be 112, wed Safiya Abdulle with the blessing of his family.

'I didn't force her but used my experience to convince her of my love and then we agreed to marry,' he said.



Mr Dhore already has 18 children by five different wives but insists he is keen to expand his family further with his young bride.

He said he wanted to tie the knot with Safiya for years but had patiently waited for her to grow up before proposing.

He claimed his children and his two surviving wives agreed to the marriage, along with his wife's parents.

After the wedding in central Somalia, Mr Dhore said: 'Today, God helped me realise my dream.' The bride's family said she was 'happy with her new husband'.

If Mr Dhore is as long in the tooth as he claims, he would be among the three oldest men in the world.

Adolescent girls in the eastern African country are often married off to older men but it is rare for a man as old as Mr Dhore to marry a girl of Safiya's age.

Before the government collapsed in 1991, the minimum age for girls to marry was 18, or 16 with the consent of their guardian.

Many parts of the country now follow Sharia law, which can allow marriage from the age of puberty. Polygamy, however, is widely practised in predominantly Muslim Somalia. (from metro)
