OAP left in agony as medics bungle hip op 0891395

Sheila Kendall, 79, desperately needs an operation on her broken artificial hip but after the third cancellation she was told she would be better off having it done in the UK. Her daughter is about to pay almost £9,000 for a private procedure over there. (Picture by Peter Frankland, 0891395)

A PENSIONER has been left in terrible pain for the last four months because surgeons have failed to organise the hip operation she needs.
And the Medical Specialist Group, which employs all surgeons locally, admitted it had handled the OAP’s case badly and apologised for the ‘failure’.
Sheila Kendall fractured her 12-year-old artificial hip in August and has had three scheduled operations to fix the problem cancelled She was then told that her surgeon believed it would be better for her to be referred off-island for the procedure.
Her daughter is so disgusted by the lack of activity in her mother’s case that she is now preparing to pay for the 79-year-old to have the operation privately – and that could cost as much as £8,900 in the UK, according to privatehealth.co.uk.
Since the fracture, the pensioner, who lives in Rue de La Corderie, Vale, has had to use a walking frame or wheelchair to get around.
Mrs Kendall also received a letter from her Medical Specialist Group surgeon to say sorry for the way in which her case had been handled.
When contacted by the Guernsey Press, MSG chairman Dr George Oswald said the group would review its internal procedures in light of the case. (from GEP)

Sounds like a typical .. if was private she would of been done ages ago....

GUERNSEY’S medical specialists have refused to discuss whether they should pay for an OAP to have an operation in the UK after they bungled her case.
‘Despite this issue now being in the public domain, it is against the MSG’s policy to discuss individual patients with, or through, the media,’ a spokesman said.
He was responding to a suggestion by the Guernsey Press that it was unfair for 79-year-old Sheila Kendal’s family to fund the cost of a private hip replacement after the MSG failed to provide the treatment she needed.
The group apologised to Mrs Kendal after it could not organise successfully an operation to repair her broken artificial hip.
Mrs Kendal sustained the injury in August and had to endure the cancellation of a planned operation on three separate occasions before her surgeon acknowledged that it would be better if she was sent to the UK for treatment.
Her daughter was disgusted that, four months after the hip broke, her mother was still in agony and without a set operation date. She has offered to pay for her to be seen privately in the UK.
The Guernsey Press asked the MSG what measures it would take to remedy the situation. Would it, for example, consider helping towards the approximate £8,900 it would cost for Mrs Kendal to go private?
But the group would not answer those questions.(from thisisguernsey)

Course they wont say anything, they would not want to admit to any liability..

GD I think they have said enough to admit liability, after all they have apologised for not organising an operation sooner. The less they say the easier to defend any prosecution.
Again the press report does not answer all the questions and makes one party out to be rather nasty but at the moment we are left with three cancelled appointments. So why were the appointments cancelled? From above I read that the op' can not be done in Gsy, but why not? and if that is the case why has it taken so long to tell the patient? Who would normally pay for an op' if it could not be performed in Gsy? Are MSG contractually bound to assist if not why should they?

Without the questions being answered it makes it look as if the big rich company is bearing down on the poor pensioner but that may not be the case. For me, as with a lot of the editorial quoted from the press I would like to see more pertinent info'.
