Landlords turn down new terms
SEVERAL pub landlords have rejected longer leases tied to increased rents from the company that took over from CI Traders.
The majority of tenants at the pubs belonging to Sandpiper CI, which have all been put up for sale by the company, have rejected new eight-year leases at higher rents. Although CI Hospitality would not say how many had turned down the proposals so far, the JEP has been told by a tenant who did not want to be named that most had done so. The leases would have removed an existing clause that gives tenants or the company the right to cancel the deal with six months' notice. They prompted tenants from pubs including the Townhouse, Fridays and the Farmer's Inn to get together about the proposals. Noel Flood (49), tenant at Bellini's / Blue Note Bar, said: 'It is a precarious situation at the moment. The tourism figures are not looking good and they are introducing extra duty and GST - any increase in costs is a worry.' Trevor Simon (50), who runs the S-Bar and the Exeter, added that tenants were hoping that any buyers would invest more in the premises. He said: 'We are looking forward to a new company taking over so that our outlets are brought up to standard to allow us to offer a better service in a better environment.' ( from This is Jersey)
