Joyriders stole a car in Alderney before rolling it off a cliff.

A green Rover Metro was taken in Crabby on Monday night and tipped over steep 300ft cliffs below the Giffoine on Alderney's south-west coast.

Alderney's lifeboat was launched this afternoon to look for injured people but nobody was found.

Sergeant Colin Solway said: "The car had its keys in the ignition when it was taken. If you leave keys in your car an opportunist is going to jump on it. Take away the opportunity - make it more difficult for people."

Sgt Solway said the lifeboat had been called as a precaution.

He added: "Enquiries into the incident are continuing. Anyone with any information should get in touch."

A spokesman for the RNLI confirmed that Trent class lifeboat Roy Barker I and a boarding vessel were launched at 12.35pm and returned to Braye Harbour at 1.20pm.

Witnesses or people with information about the car should contact Alderney Police on 824999. (from Aldernery Journal)
