Heatwave: Think twice before running marathon
A health warning has been issued ahead of tomorrow's (Sunday) marathon in Jersey.
Because of the high temperatures, the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke is higher than usual.
Medical Officer of Health Dr Susan Turnbull says runners should wear lightweight running gear, apply sunscreen and make it their top priority to avoid dehydration and overheating.
In a recent London Marathon, temperatures reached 21 and one-in-seven runners needed medical treatment. The temperature in Jersey will be five degrees hotter.
Dr Turnbull says some people, like those with existing medical conditions, should think about pulling out.
That warning also applies to older people, children and anyone feeling unwell at the start.
