A new strategy focusing on reducing Guernsey's waste and increasing the amount recycled will be put to the states in February next year.

The plans include shipping any left-over waste overseas for treatment - and the front-runner is Jersey.

If the waste is sent to Jersey's incinerator - which has spare capacity - it could mean big business for the island. It can burn up to 110,000 tonnes of rubbish.

Public Services Minister Deputy Bernard Flouquet said: "Last year the States decided that we had to rethink how we deal with our waste, from top to bottom. That is what we have done, and the proposed strategy that we will put before the States will represent a comprehensive approach to the issue of waste management, with the priority being on reduction, reuse, and recycling."

The draft Waste Management and Disposal Plan Plan indicates three potential scenarios for dealing with the island's waste.

All three options include extensive upfront measures to reduce waste and increase recycling, for which there would be a new target of 70% by 2025.

They also include separate food waste collection and treatment, kerbside recycling, and a materials recovery facility to extract recyclable material from commercial waste.

For any waste that is left over after efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle, the Department's preferred option is export, either to Jersey or another location.

The two other possibilities are on-island heat treatment - in an incinerator, gasification or pyrolysis plant - or a further stage of treatment to produce a fuel product, which would also be shipped off-island.

For the first time, the strategy has been based around islanders' feedback.

Public Services are sending the draft plan to Douzaines and other statutory consultees so that their views can also be incorporated in the final proposals.

At the moment about 70,000 tonnes of household waste is produced in Jersey each year. The new incinerator can burn between 35,000 and 110,000 tonnes

What a harebrained idea this is. Why do you want to SPEND money sending it to Jersey for them to MAKE money turning it into electricity.

Get real and build your own electricity generating incinerator. You could have done it by now with all the money you've wasted arguing about it.

Everyone is out to make money these days , by all means send it to Jersey , but if we wait until they are up and running they will be crying out for our rubbish as you will find like all incinerators they are hungry and need to be kept running to be cost efficient, so by then all we will have to pay is the shipping and i am sure if the States put it out to tender get the quotes then send them all a letter telling them to get real (as the word is out now that Guernsey is great place to think of a number then triple it and it will be accepted by our States ) we could do this .

Ugly incinerator ! Have you been up the dump lately ? And the proposed site for an incinerator is hardly a beauty spot at present is it ?

If you look in the archives at the general election in 2004 they were interviewing people at beau se jour ... they asked me what i thought about the rubbish issue
i said then.."send it to jersey"!
So this is NOT an idea that any deputies have had them self.
