Electoral roll falls short of target Empty Electoral roll falls short of target

The number of people signed up to vote at Guernsey's general election could be the lowest for more than a decade.

Despite a six month campaign to encourage islanders to sign up to the electoral roll, the amount who have done so is way short of the target.

In 2004 there were 30,459 registered to vote; in 2008 there were 33,253, but with only 28,000 signed up so far, it's not looking good this time around.

The roll closes on Wednesday 29th February, which means if you were planning to cast your vote in April's election, you only have a day to secure that right.

Paul Whitfield, Deputy Registrar General of Electors gave this rallying call: "Simply if there's some frustration with current politics, and we don't know who the new candidates are standing until after the registration has closed. Once tomorrow night has closed you've lost your opportunity to vote come the 18th of April. So even at this late stage, contact the office, go online and register."

In the UK it is a legal requirement to complete an electoral roll form. Actually voting is, of course, an option of choice.
