Algae gives Jersey water an 'earthy' taste Empty Algae gives Jersey water an 'earthy' taste

Islanders with 'earthy' tasting tap water are being assured it is safe to drink.

Jersey Water are reassuring customers in some areas of Jersey, who may be experiencing a ‘taste’ or ‘odour’ in treated mains water.

A relatively small number of customers have reported an ‘earthy’ taste or odour in their water.

The water provider said the cause is very likely to be due to microscopic algae blooming in the Val De La Mare reservoir at St Ouen's and St Peter.

This can happen when unusually warm and sunny weather conditions occur, as was the case in March this year.

They are undertaking daily tests of the water supply - from source to tap - to confirm that it meets all quality requirements and there is no risk to public health.

All of the appropriate tests and measures are underway to resolve this matter as swiftly as possible.
