Threat of strike at Jersey Airport Empty Threat of strike at Jersey Airport

A cut in hours to Servisair staff could lead to them taking industrial action.

That is the warning from the local branch of the union, Unite, which represents the baggage handlers who will be affected.

They have been told by Servisair managers to expect a cut of about 20 hours per month in their pay, due to a reduced workload in winter months.

The company say that policy is in line with their approach at other UK airports, and that they employed a similar policy in Jersey five years ago.

A reduction in flight routes from 48 to 20 mean there is less work for staff, so Servisair insist the changes are necessary, and that they do not plan to make anyone redundant.

But Unite claim reducing staff hours has not been done in the island before and that up to seven staff are at risk of losing their jobs as part of these proposals.

The union say staff morale is at 'rock bottom' and they're currently being balloted on industrial action, which could result in them striking over the festive period.

However, in a statement, Servisair said, "Consultations with unions and staff over the re-adjustment of hours to cope with the demands of the winter schedule are ongoing. We are confident this matter can be resolved without any disruption to the traveling public".
