Mont Cuet "The fire still burns"
A new attempt will be made in April to
extinguish an underground fire which has been burning for at least four
years at a rubbish tip in Guernsey.
The Mont Cuet tip will be flooded with water from Vale Pond,
which will be supplemented by water from Vale Marais pumping station.
Hundreds of thousands of pounds have already been spent trying to extinguish the blaze deep within the tip.
The fire started when oxygen seeped into the landfill.
A public meeting is being held by the Public
Service Department at 1900 GMT on Thursday at the Peninsula Hotel to
explain the latest plan.
They said there will be pipe running from the vale pond to Mon Cuet along the coast line ,so my question is how much will his cost ?

Tip Fire
One thing I don't understand is why does it have to be water from the vale pond? - wouldn't sea water do the same thing? - which is just a hundred metres away?....

Re: Mont Cuet "The fire still burns"
apparently sea water gives off a gas and it is not known what the effects would be on people nearby.

Re: Mont Cuet "The fire still burns"
Imo this has been an unnecessary expensive nonsense, the
PAC (and it’s not Flouquet’s fault you have to blame Bell for this) they have been
fighting this fire for four years and what is their solution to the problem?
Pump water out of a quarry and flood the tip for 72 hours until it is
extinguished, brilliant idea, 200
thousand pounds on consultants to come up with a solution that George Domaille
a Guernsey man suggested four years ago, now we are told that this will cost
another 700K to put the fire out, nearly a million pounds in all, no wonder
we despair about our politicians. We certainly did not need these expensive consultants to tell us we already know.

Re: Mont Cuet "The fire still burns"
The report said they will be topping up the pond from outfall i believe . I know i am no expert by any stretch of the imagination but why not let it burn until it becomes a problem , i take it there is no smoke at the moment so kill two birds with one stone (so to speak) .
I seem to remember way back the states spent a large amount of money to get more experts in to line the quarry before it became a tip (abseilers like we have none of them) They also have systems in place to extract the gases etc so my point is a huge amount of tax payers money went in to gearing up the tip .So what went so badly wrong.

Re: Mont Cuet "The fire still burns"
They reckon its goin to cost a million, it will be more.
Once all the poisoned water seeps out in to the surrounding fields and bays, the tip will dry out over the summer, then the rotting will aain cause heat deep inside and the tip will burn away again.
Let it burn, its not going to harm anyone or anything any more than it has been, close the tip if its dangerous and build the waste to energy plant, spend the money there rather than waste it putting out a fire that will reignite and poison the area.
After wards theyll say, "oh we didnt realise it would just relight"
Much like they said "oh we didnt realise there would be granite" when the st sampsons marina went over a year too long and millions over budget.

Re: Mont Cuet "The fire still burns"
it is the best place for the incinerator to go .nature is telling them that now
but unless all the rubbish is burned in there nothing will be able to be built on it

Re: Mont Cuet "The fire still burns"
I asked years ago why there was such a stink over the whole of the North from the tip - apparently it's from gases such as Hydrogen Sulphide ( bad egg smell:windy1:) and it was finally admitted that they couldn't burn them off because of this fire.
I reckon they should blow the whole lot up with an enormous controlled explosion, which would put out the fire, burn off all the gas, incinerate all the rubbish and leave a huge crater so we can start filling it up all over again. Job done! :)

I go back to my previous post:
I reckon they should blow the whole lot up with an enormous controlled explosion, which would put out the fire, burn off all the gas, incinerate all the rubbish and leave a huge crater so we can start filling it up all over again. Job done! :)
It could be worse - we could be in a position like the Crapauds with their overspend on their incinerator! :)

Re: Mont Cuet "The fire still burns"
Well after they pumped all that water, hoped they done the job, removed the pipes, and sent them back, the results are in...
They "FAILED" .. the fire has re-ignited and the tip still burns...
Another waste of taxpayers money
Why did they not wait until the tests had finished, before the removal of the pipes etc.
Ah well another "Cock-up" thats going to cost...

Re: Mont Cuet "The fire still burns"
leave it burn i say .we have created an incinerator free.so stop wasting our money ,and if this did not work we want our money back as it did not work as guaranteed

Re: Mont Cuet "The fire still burns"
Plans are being put in place to try to extinguish an underground fire which has been burning for at least four years at a tip in Guernsey.
The fire at the landfill site at Mont Cuet was discovered in April 2005 and, despite numerous attempts to put it out, the fire is still burning.
Last month more than 10 million gallons of water was pumped into the tip via a series of boreholes drilled inside it.
It failed to put the fire out so plans are in place to re-circulate the water.
The Public Services Department is also planning to ask for an extension on the agreement which allows them to have more than two metres depth of waste liquid, known as leachate, in the landfill at any one time.
It is believed if the fire is allowed to continue it could create a recess inside the tip and make it unsafe for people to work on top of the landfill. (from BBC News)
