Hospital using washable nappies Empty Hospital using washable nappies

Newborn babies are to be put in washable nappies at Jersey's General Hospital as part of a trial scheme.

The two-month trial is being carried out to reduce the amount of disposable nappies.

About five million nappies are thrown away every year, accounting for about 3% of island waste, the Transport and Technical Services Department said.

The hospital's maternity unit will be using washable nappies to encourage new mothers to use them.

It is thought that only 30 nappies will be needed at the unit and that the cost, including washing them, would be about half the price of using disposables.

Sounds like a great Idea ... but will it catch on?

Can't see why not - there are generations of children out there that were reared in non-disposible nappies - and lived to tell the tale :-)

Thirty nappies in a maternity hospital?...
I cannot see that happening unless they cater for one baby at the time!!!!
and in Jersey???? (where the weather is much like Guernsey?)
Definitely don't see it happening!!! of course I have heard of "clothes driers"...which, when I last looked, gobbled up a lot of electricity...
so they are saving land fill, at the expense of pollution?
All I can say is...I wish we had disposables nappies back than, when I was raising my children...without washing machine and not a dryer in sight!

tax the disposable ones
in this day and age it does not take long to wash nappies
i used them and so did my daughter .
we have auto washing machines and low temp washing powder
most homes not have good heating so a clothes horse will dry in no time if they cannot be dried on the washing line
about time this was sorted like the plastic bag issue it take someone to start it off

When I said that I could not ee it happening , Kat, I was referring to the 30 nappies to be used in a Maternity hospital...
I had about that many...and one child...and I was struggling to keep up!!! I assume an hospital would have more than one baby at any time?

makes more work for the laudry but will create more jobs for folks

Unlike our days Anomiso (where we were made to stay 10 days after the birth) nowadays it's birth - one bum change - nappy in the laundry and Mother home to use whatever suits her best.......so they will cope......

Although there is a cost in washing and an enviroment element to that but that would be offset by energy usued in the transportation and manufactuing of disposable ones which would probably be more.

Good Idea hope it catches on as the landfills could do without them.
