Transport Minister challenged over new drainage law Empty Transport Minister challenged over new drainage law

DEVELOPERS could soon have the right to dig up Islanders' gardens and driveways to lay drains without their consent.

Transport Minister Guy de Faye has changed the Drainage (Jersey) Law so that private developers can lay pipes through private land without the owner's consent - if the work also benefits neighbours.

But the changes, made via ministerial decision in November, are on hold after Health Minister Ben Shenton lodged a proposition to overturn Deputy de Faye's ruling.

Senator Shenton, whose proposition will be debated later this month, has argued that changing the law will give developers the right to lay drains wherever they like.
