Lord queries Bailiffs’ dual roles
Bailiff Sir Geoffrey Rowland told the review that the duality of the role was unlikely to lead to abuse. He saw the appointment of someone unsuitable for the Bailiff’s office as a greater threat. (Picture by Adrian Miller, 0790469)
THE role of the Bailiff has been thrown into doubt by an independent report.
In a study published yesterday on the role of Jersey’s Bailiff, which is almost identical to that of Guernsey’s, a panel led by former Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland Lord Carswell said States members should elect their own president from within or without the Assembly.
The panel’s recommendations look set to be debated in Jersey next summer after that island’s chief minister yesterday said that ‘a further report on the Carswell Review recommendations will be prepared before April 2011 for discussion by the States at a later date’.
Any change to the role in Jersey could have profound implications locally and it is understood the Policy Council has maintained a close watch over developments. (from GEP)

Why don't your representatives tell these outsider busybodies to sling their hook and go jump in the lake.

Re: Lord queries Bailiffs’ dual roles
Funny he was so quiet when Sark were forced to do exactly this to their Senechal.
Now it's, "I won't abuse my position but anybody else would"
Ditch the post completly, along with the Governer and 20 Deputies.

Re: Lord queries Bailiffs’ dual roles
You would be very unwise to ditch the Bailiff. He represents the fact that the Channel Islands are independent subjects of the Queen and are not under the heel of the UK Government.
Mind you I do sometimes wonder where the loyalty of some of your States members lays.
