Unemployment - it's getting worse

An extra 32 people have joined the queue for work in the last month making the total 432 compared with 294 at the same last year. The percentage of the population now classified as jobless under the International Labour Organisation definitikon is 1.32%

In addition more than 150 people have only been able to find part-time or casual work. Add those to the jobless total along with people on government training schemes and work projects and the picture of unemployment is even more stark.

The total stands at 619 - that is 1.89% of the working population. The figure has grown by more than 40 in the last month and by 178 in the last year.

I have been optimistic about the unemployment figures in the past, but over the last couple of weeks I have heard of a lot of businesses that are intending to close down or reduce staff levels. This is likely to cause a domino effect, causing the figures to rapidly rise even further.

its only gonna get worse ...think its time to put a stop on unqualified people coming to the island to work...we all know we have the unemployable but we also know there are people signing on who would be grateful for any kind of job until something better comes along..it must make them so angry to see foreign workers in full employment when jobs are scarce xx

Its time to weed out the unqualified Eastern European 'tradesman' that are working on the islands building sites. That includes those that are driving round the island and knocking on doors to inform people that their roof needs 'fixing'.
