Re: Unemployment Up
Jobless figure increases by 57% | |
Despite a slight fall in unemployment in Guernsey last month, the number of people out of work was considerably higher than the same time last year. States figures showed 393 people were unemployed - about 1% of the working population and a 57% rise from May 2008 when 250 people were without work. It is 30 fewer than April, when 423 were registered as unemployed. The highest proportion of people without full-time employment were men in their 20s. (bbc news) |

Re: Unemployment Up
Unemployment up from last month, and 165 up on last year.
And this is the best time of the year to get employed!
What will the winter months bring....

Re: Unemployment Up
i could have done with some of those to help clean the town instead of my trying to hobble around with my walking stick trying to clean it up
i would have had lots of jobs for them to do ....i do it all for nothing while they sit on there buttt getting paid!

In this economic climate I should imagine that quite a percentage of these people who are unemployed are not the habitual 'non workers' but people who have found themselves in this situation due to losing their jobs......probably got families and mortgages to honour as well!! and I know from bitter experience that you get precious little help or sympathy when you are in that situation....

Re: Unemployment Up
As you say, not looking good for the winter, The states need to be looking at some schemes to stop this getting out of control.
Small export type operations that do not conflict with existing businesses even if its something that breaks even its better than paying out dole money.
Maybe if people have ideas for new ventures that will not conflict with existing business and the states could help subsise it, that may employ some of these people.

Re: Unemployment Up
Just think of all the jobs you could get done with that lot !
Clean up the Cruet headland of all the rubbish blown off the tip.
Fill all the pot holes in the coastal car parks and access roads.
Clear blown sand off the West coast footpath to help passage of wheelchairs, scooters and baby buggies etc
Clear some of the excess seaweed
And when that all done, I'm sure we could think of a lot more.

Re: Unemployment Up
There are obviously many people now loosing jobs through no fault of their own and the states should be planning how to help them as its going to get a lot worse befor it gets better.
I dont see anything in the media that points to them haveing any plan

Re: Unemployment Up
Quite right Digger, the lazy gits who just don't want to work should be made to do voluntary work until they find a job, and any who refuse or don't turn up should not be given a penny. I'm sick of paying for lazy chavs to buy their Spice and Diamond White!

Re: Unemployment Up
The number of people out of work in Guernsey has gone up 87 in a year, according to the figures for April.
The Social Security Department said 510 people, about 1.5% of the population, were registered as unemployed last month, 12 more than in March.
Thirty-four of those registered were involved in schemes including the Community and Environmental Project and the Karabiner young people's scheme.
The remaining total included 130 who were in part-time or casual employment. (from BBC)

Re: Unemployment Up
...especially in the building trade. Why are there so many non locals working on the large building sites, I dont remember seeing any of these jobs advertised locally. Long Port do seem to prefer non local labour. Never mind, the local craftsmen will be around to put things right when the cheap labour has left.travis wrote:now why does that not surprise me, when more and more ppl from outside guernsey are being employed as cheap labour

Re: Unemployment Up
because they already have jobs. (The long-term unemployed are generally unemployable and certainly do not have C&G in a building discipline.)

Re: Unemployment Up
some youngsters are just lazy and cant be bothered, take a relation of mine, he is unemployed, so is his girlfriend and her sister, his best mate then gave up an app in plumbing so they could hang out as a foursome..
this was a while ago and they are still unemployed ( unemployable )
